5G is not only the fifth generation of mobile communications, but also the synthesis of an era of technology convergence. Wireless and wireline networks, AI, SDN, NFV, MEC, automation, robotics, and sensors, among several other technologies, are coalescing to address the challenges and opportunities of today and of the future. In this context, openness and collaboration reach unprecedented importance to drive innovation faster and further. In recognizing the value of collaboration in the digital ecosystem, Ciena is a proud founding partner of the transformational ENCQOR 5G partnership.
5G is more than just a wireless technology, given that most of the data journey from the mobile device to datacenters, where content is hosted, which take place over fiber-optic wireline networks. As a leading innovator in transport network technologies, Ciena is bringing to life hardware and software solutions that enable the new applications and experiences that 5G is expected to deliver. Ciena’s approach builds on open, automated, and adaptive networks to cost-effectively address current 4G and future 5G demands.
Ciena recently launched its new series of 5G routers, the 5164, 5166, and 5168. These routers are purpose-built for 5G, converging 4G/5G xHaul (fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul) networks onto a common, simpler, and cost-effective infrastructure. With dense 1/10/25GbE to 100/200/400GbE aggregation, and support for both hard network slicing (FlexEthernet) and soft network slicing (Segment Routing), these platforms simplify and de-risk the unique 4G to 5G journeys of mobile and wholesale operators alike.
This architecture evolution aligns closely with the Adaptive IPTM vision, a different and better way to deliver standards and IP-based connectivity, one that is automated, open, and lean. Ciena’s Adaptive IP reduces the complexity associated with legacy network designs, removing unnecessary protocols, and leveraging segment routing that results in improved performance, easier deployments, and decreased power, space, and total cost of ownership.
Ciena’s Blue Planet’s standards-based and vendor-agnostic 5G Automation solution allows operators to leverage network slicing and dynamic inventory, helping bring 5G to market faster and at a lower cost, while enabling new opportunities for maximum monetization of network assets.
To deliver the full promise of 5G, technology providers of different realms must collaborate with vendors of diverse fields, demanding an open and standards-based architecture as a necessary common ground. Ciena continues to rely on openness and collaboration as it drives rapid innovation in the 5G networking space and supports network operators in delivering more intelligent, scalable, and cost-effective 5G services.
